Students Walk to a Bright Future at Walk to School Day

Sporting bright yellow t-shirts and sunglasses, MVSD students Walked to a Bright Future as they celebrated International Walk to School Day on October 4.  Hundreds of students, parents, family members, teachers, staff members, and volunteers from all 12 schools gathered at 6:30 a.m. at six different meeting locations before beginning their walk to their school site.

Led by adult volunteers, crossing guards, and El Monte Police Department escorts, students and other walkers took off with signs and pom poms in hand showing their commitment to be physically active and promoting pedestrian safety.  The walking school buses were impressive as they lined the streets making their way to each campus.

MVSD once again partnered with Day One and El Monte Promise for its 3rd Annual Walk to School Day event, themed “Walk to a Bright Future.” T-shirts were given to the first 100 students from each school to register for the event and raffle prizes were given out to the walkers once they arrived at their schools.

“It is wonderful to see so many students and family members out here walking,” said Lillian Maldonado French, District Superintendent.  “Walk to School Day is a great way to promote the importance of having safe routes to school as well as encourage being physically active.  It’s also a fun morning and great way to start the school day!”

“It’s kind of hard getting up so early but it’s really fun to walk to school with my friends and teachers,” said a 4th grader from Payne School who walked to her school from Mountain View Park.

“Walking to school is fun,” said a 1st grader from Maxson School.  “The police car was driving next to us on the street and flashed its lights the whole way.”

According to David Diaz, from Day One, in addition to promoting wellness, Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking.

“It’s so important to have safe routes for walking and biking in the community,” said Diaz. “Events like this highlight pedestrian safety and traffic congestion and also build connections between families, schools, and the broader community.”

Veronica Godinez, Maxson School’s new principal enjoyed the Walk to School Day event and was proud of the great turnout her school had.

“We had over 100 walking Maxson Falcons making our way from the park to our school,” she said.  “We all had a great time being together and getting a little exercise before school starts.”
