Schools Celebrate Lunar New Year

Schools Celebrate Lunar New Year

Celebrating the Lunar New Year, schools in the Mountain View School District (MVSD) held parades, assemblies and activities to usher in 2020 and the Year of the Rat.

Students and staff at Parkview and Twin Lakes Schools held festive parades commemorating the Lunar New Year.  Students marched and danced around the schools with signs, noise makers, paper lanterns, hats, masks and more to celebrate this important holiday in the Asian culture.  They enthusiastically cheered Happy New Year in both Mandarin and Cantonese.

At Maxson School students and staff were treated to a Traditional Chinese Lion Dance by The Immortals, a renowned lion dance team based in Los Angeles.  The exceptional performance featured the beautiful lion dance, drums, cymbals and a Gung-Fu demonstration. The students were excited to learn that four powerful animals were combined to create the lion including the horn of a unicorn, the eyes of a phoenix, the beard of a dragon and the body of a turtle.  The performance commemorated the New Year and extended wishes for a prosperous year full of good fortune, good health and good luck.

Again this year, MVSD Board of Education member, Cindy Wu coordinated a donation that provided every student in the District with a traditional red envelop with a lucky candy in it.

The District’s Mandarin Language Enrichment program at Twin Lakes School hosted a Gallery Walk featuring some of the work the Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten students have completed. The students and their teachers were excited to open their classrooms and share what they are learning in the program, as well as complete some art projects together for the Lunar New Year.  Taught by Jenelle Chou, a credentialed Mandarin Language teacher, the Mandarin Enrichment Program provides students with 45 minutes of Mandarin Language instruction three times a week.  The young scholars are doing an excellent job speaking, listening and writing in Mandarin.   For many students in the program, the addition of Mandarin is enabling them to be tri-lingual, with knowledge of English, Spanish and Mandarin.  The enrichment program also includes additional language support for students during the week as well as parent workshops. This school year the Mandarin Language Enrichment is a blended program with the goal to have a full Mandarin Dual Language Immersion program next school year.  Informational meetings for the 2020-21 Mandarin Dual Language Immersion Program will be held at Twin Lakes School located at 3900 Gilman Road in El Monte on Thursday, February 6 at 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. and Thursday, March 19 at 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
