Schools Celebrate Read Across America

Schools Celebrate Read Across America

It's all about reading at schools throughout MVSD as students celebrate Read Across America, and the birthday of famed children’s author, Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.  A National Education Association sponsored event, Read Across America is the largest reading event in the United States, and MVSD was happy to join in the nationwide celebration as schools hosted Read Aloud celebrations and filled the week with activities promoting the importance of reading.

Guest readers were invited into classrooms to share a favorite book with students.  Guest readers included police officers, firemen, city officials, local business people, veterans of the armed forces, MVSD board members, a few of the Laker Girls, school district staff and retirees, parents and volunteers.  Students were thrilled when popular Dr. Seuss characters like The Cat in the Hat and Thing 1 and Thing 2 visited classrooms and encouraged them to read.

“Inviting guest readers to our schools is a great way to show students the importance of reading,” said Lillian Maldonado French, MVSD superintendent, who read to several classes.  “We appreciate all the volunteer readers who took time out of their schedules to visit our schools and read to our students. It truly does make a tremendous impact.   I love to see the students so excited about reading and I appreciate the dedication and efforts of our teachers and support personnel who do an excellent job instilling a love of reading in our students.”

Mt. View High School’s Teacher Preparation Academy (TPA) students supported the Read Aloud celebrations by reading to students at La Primaria, Baker and Parkview Schools, dressing up as Dr. Seuss characters and helping with arts and crafts activities at Parkview’s Family Literacy Night.

Along with welcoming guest readers, schools hosted pajama days where students wore their PJ’s to school and snuggled up with a good book, they took their reading outside for reading on the lawn, and held book cover art contests, bookmark contests and Dr. Seuss trivia games.   Twin Lakes and Cogswell Schools held their second of three Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) book distributions where students were able to select a free book to take home.

Literacy is the foundation of every child’s education and opens doorways to opportunity.  MVSD is happy to participate in Read Across America, partnering educators, parents, librarians, mentors and community members to read with students and give them a lifelong gift of learning.  So remember, as Dr. Seuss would say – “you’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read with a child.”
