Students Compete in Elks Drug Quiz Show

Students Compete in Elks Drug Quiz Show

The Second Annual Elks Drug Quiz Show, coordinated by the Duarte Elks Lodge #1427 and the San Gabriel Valley District Elks and sponsored by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the California-Hawaii Elks Association, was recently held at Kranz Intermediate School.

Competing in the Quiz Show were student teams from Kranz Intermediate School, Madrid Middle School and Monte Vista School.  The 6th, 7th and 8th graders vied to answer questions related to drug prevention and awareness in three rounds of competition including a group collaboration round, a multiple choice round and the popular buzzer round.

Taking the reins as “hosts” were Donna McEntire, member of the Duarte Elks and Chris McEntire, San Gabriel Valley Elks District Drug Awareness Chair.  The annual Drug Quiz Show is part of the Elks’ Nationwide Drug Awareness Program and provides students a fun way to gain knowledge, practice skills, and enhance the self-esteem needed to make safe, healthy, real-life choices regarding a variety of life issues, including the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.

“Welcome to our Second Annual Drug Quiz Show!” said Donna McEntire. “We are excited to watch you compete and showcase your knowledge and awareness of the effects of drug use.  Along with answering questions and showing us what you know, participating in this quiz show encourages good sportsmanship, teamwork and helps build connectedness with your classmates.”

Coaching the teams were teachers Bernadette Dincin from Kranz, Chris Jimenez from Madrid and Michael Letzeiser from Monte Vista who worked with the students as they studied drug awareness curriculum provided by the Elks.

The Elks’ drug awareness curriculum also ties into the Common Core learning standards including Health, Physical Education, and Family and Consumer Sciences; English Language Arts; Career Development and Occupational Studies; and the Arts.

“Using the fact-based curriculum materials provided by the Elks, as well as study aids, the student contestants learn about the risks and dangers of alcohol, drug and tobacco use.  They also receive information to help them develop important life-skills in dealing with conflict resolution, stress, bullying and grief,” Donna McEntire added.

The three teams did an excellent job in the three rounds of the competition with Monte Vista edging out Kranz and Madrid for the win.  The students displayed great expertise in the area of drug prevention and awareness. Each participant earned a certificate and a medal for their hard work and dedication.

“Congratulations to all the participants,” said Chris McEntire.  “You are all winners because you put in the work and did an amazing job tonight.  We look forward to many of you 6th and 7th graders returning next year to compete in our 3rd Annual Elks Drug Quiz Show.”

MVSD appreciates the partnership of the Elks and their commitment to support students and families.

“We want to thank the Elks Club for putting this worthwhile event together for our students,” said George Schonborn, MVSD’s Director of Pupil Personnel Services.  “The Quiz Show offers a great way for students to learn about these important topics, compete against each other and have fun.”

Schonborn also thanked the parents in attendance for supporting their students and encouraged them to continue to stay involved in their educational endeavors.

The Elks’ comprehensive drug awareness program shows their strong commitment to eliminating the use and abuse of illegal drugs by all members of society, and reinforces their belief that in order to ensure a bright future for our country, it is essential that our children be raised in a drug-free environment.
