Students Excel in Duarte Elks Lodge Contests

    The outstanding work of 18 Mountain View School District students has been recognized by the Duarte Elks Lodge #1427 as winners in their annual essay, poster and video contests.  The contest divisions include elementary level and middle school level as well as a girls and boys winner for each.  Prizes included $100 for 1st place, $75 for 2nd place and $50 for 3rd place winners.

Five exceptional writers earned top honors for their essays on Drug Awareness.  In the elementary division winners included 1st place, Benjamin Garcia from Twin Lakes School, 2nd place Ana Hua, Twin Lakes School, 3rd place April Romero, Monte Vista School, 3rd place Ryan Tram, Parkview School and in the middle school division Noe Magana from Madrid Middle School earned 2nd place.  For the topic of Americanism, four MVSD students earned honors including Jair Falcon from Miramonte School, 2nd place elementary division and MVSD students swept the middle school division, with 1st place going to Juan Meza and 2nd place going to Alexa Mejia both from Kranz Intermediate School and 3rd place going to John Sanchez-Lopez from Madrid Middle School.

Six students also placed for their creative and meaningful artwork in the Drug Awareness Poster Contest and included Miley Quinones 1st place, Jared Contreras 1st place, Joseph Chavez, 2nd place, Kayla Rodriguez 3rd place and Izaiah Paiz 3rd place all from Twin Lakes School.  Earning 2nd place in the category was Alejandra Jacinto from Miramonte School.

   In the Drug Awareness Video Contest, three talented student teams from Madrid Middle School earned top honors including 1st place -Valerie Diaz, Brianna Ramirez, Jordyn Robles and Anahi Altamirano, 2nd place -Lilianna Gonzales, Lindsay Vargas, Chanel Hernandez Sanchez and Carolina Virrueta, and 3rd place - Sophia Barajas, Chloe Do, Siomara Armendariz and Ruby Cruz.

   Benjamin Garcia’s Drug Awareness essay was also named an Elks District winner and 2nd place California Hawaii Elks Association State winner. He was awarded an additional $100 from the District and $300 from the State for his outstanding essay.   MVSD had two additional District winners in Division II of the Americanism Essay Contest including Juan Meza, 2nd place earning $75 and Alexa Mejia 3rd place earning $50.00.  

      “We are so proud to partner with the Mountain View School District to provide these contest opportunities for students,” said Donna McEntire, Duarte Elks Lodge member.  “The students in Mountain View and throughout the community did an outstanding job and our lodge was pleased to award them with scholarships for their writing and artistic skills.”
