As Thanksgiving Approaches, Monte Vista School

Focuses on Thankfulness and Football

With Thanksgiving break quickly approaching, Monte Vista School celebrated a week of gratitude with activities centered on thankfulness.

The junior high leadership class sponsored a gratitude banner project encouraging students to write a note stating what they are grateful for and why.

“November is a month to take some time to pause, reflect and express gratitude for what’s going well in our lives,” said Christina Correa, 7th/8th grade teacher and Student Activities Director.

“We all face obstacles and challenges that come in many different forms and one way to combat our difficult feelings is to highlight what’s going well in our lives and think of the blessings we have. Gratitude helps us refocus our attention on what is going well for us, rather than focusing on the negative and we hope our junior high project and other activities help our students and staff see all they have to be thankful for,” she added.

The school also kicked off its monthly after school Read Aloud events in the library with a story read by Glenda Giron, Co-Principal.  Students and family members gathered in the library to listen to Ms. Giron read Bear Came Along, a wonderful story about friendship, working together and being thankful.   Following the read aloud, students and families participated in a hands-on thankfulness activity led by Estela Morrow, Librarian and Myra Lomeli, Community Liaison.  Some of the things the students expressed they were thankful for included family, friends, pets, teachers, parents, siblings, school and food.

To conclude the week, the seventh and eighth graders took to the field for some friendly competition in the school’s inaugural Junior High Turkey Bowl flag football game.  Students lined the field along with the Think Together afterschool program’s cheerleaders who pumped up the players and crowd.
