Nutrition Services Provides Summer Meals

Mountain View School District’s Nutrition Services Department did an outstanding job this summer providing breakfast and lunch daily for over 1,300 students participating in the District’s four-week summer programs.  The daily breakfast and lunch program was also open to children 18 and under in the community.

At the conclusion of the summer school program in mid-July, Nutrition Service staff shifted their focus to providing Seven-Day Summer Meal Kits for children 18 and under.

“Thanks to an extension on waivers granted by the USDA, we were able to offer Summer Meal Kits for the community’s children,” said Brenda Zarate, MVSD’s Director of Nutrition Services. “Our meal kits included one week’s worth of breakfast and lunch entrees, fresh fruits and vegetables, and one gallon of milk for each child 18 and under.”

Over the course of the three distribution events, over 2,700 meal kits were provided to children in the community.

“Our team worked very hard assembling and distributing the meal kits at our drive-thru events and our families were very appreciative of the support,” said Zarate.  “We were happy to provide this resource for our families.”
