Payne Elementary School held a special assembly at the end of the school year recognizing its first and second grade students in the school’s Spanish Dual Language Immersion Program.

The Spanish Dual Language Immersion Program is a strong academic program that fosters bilingualism, biliteracy, and cross-cultural awareness as students become academically successful in both English and Spanish.

The program, geared to be continuous through 6th grade, is open to students of all languages to learn academic content through instruction in both languages taught. All students are provided with a standards-based curriculum that is focused on bilingual and bi-literate academic achievement.

“We have an excellent Dual Language Immersion program at Payne,” said Dr. Hugo Moreno, principal.  “We are proud to offer this opportunity to our students and the community because being fluent in two languages opens a lot of opportunities in the future.  Students who continue in the Dual Language program also receive a Seal of Biliteracy on their high school diplomas.”

The first and second graders were celebrated for their accomplishments in the program and for being on their pathway to biliteracy.

MVSD also offers a Spanish Dual Language Immersion Program at Parkview School. For more information on the Dual Immersion programs and other MVSD programs, please call 626-652-4000.
