Students Create Award Winning Short Films

Mountain View School District students in the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program at Kranz Intermediate School, Madrid Middle School and Monte Vista School put their filmmaking skills and passion for making a difference to use, creating short films for the Directing Change Program’s Annual Film Contest.  The students wrote, directed and stared in their films with great success, earning awards for their short films focused on changing the conversation about suicide and mental health issues at their schools and in their communities.  The Directing Change Program and Film Contest is part of Each Mind Matters:  California’s Mental Health Movement, and offers young people the opportunity to participate in the movement by creating 60-second films about suicide prevention and mental health that are used to support awareness, education and advocacy efforts on these topics.

The award winning filmmakers recently attended the Directing Change Red Carpet Awards Ceremony at the historic Theatre at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, where Kranz Intermediate’s film Beyond Anorexia earned a 2nd place Statewide Award.  The 7th grade filmmakers were presented their award by California’s Secretary of State, Alex Padilla and his wife Angela, the founders of Fundamental Change, an organization aimed at promoting awareness of mental health conditions.  Additionally, Honorable Mention awards were given to the following:  two films from Madrid Middle School -A Helping Hand and Support Group; three films from Kranz Intermediate School - The Importance of Self Talk, Bullying is Not a Joke and Jesus’s Story; and four films from Monte Vista School – Scars, Reach Out, Fake Smiles and The Immigrant.

MVSD is extremely proud of the students and their teachers/advisors whose films earned honors in the contest which drew over 200 submissions from middle schools throughout California.
