Promotion Ceremonies Celebrate the Achievements and Resilience of Students

Mountain View School District celebrated students promoting from eighth grade from Kranz Intermediate School, Madrid Middle School and Monte Vista School, as well as fifth and sixth graders promoting from the District’s elementary schools in modified in-person ceremonies, adhering to COVID-19 safety guidelines. Schools were grateful to be able host in-person ceremonies to honor the hard-working young scholars who rose to the challenge during this very difficult pandemic year.

The ceremonies included motivational speeches from valedictorians, salutatorians and students of the year, as well as addresses from school administrators, teachers, school board members and district administrators who honored the students for their academic achievements and encouraged them to continue to work hard, surround themselves with good people, embrace challenges, put their best effort forward, and persevere as they move on to the next grade level.

Addressing the promoting classes, the principals commended the students, teachers, staff and families for concluding a school year like no other, and expressed their appreciation to the students for their resilience, courage and perseverance as they navigated distance learning and the challenges and disappointments of the pandemic and school closures.

Cogswell Elementary School celebrated its final promoting class of sixth graders with a ceremony celebrating their many achievements in the 2020-2021 school year and during their time as Cogswell Cubs. In addition to promotion certificates, special end of the year awards and scholarships for determination, resilience and career choice were also presented. A special keynote address was given by Victoria Ponce Burl, a former Cogswell Cub and current Recreation Supervisor for the City of El Monte, who shared her wonderful memories at Cogswell and encouraged the students to be Caring, Unique, Bold and embody the Cubs spirit of tenacity, resilience and bravery as they move forward in their education.

Kranz Intermediate School celebrated the class of 2021, the final class of eighth graders to promote from the school which has educated seventh and eighth graders since 1965. Adhering to safety guidelines, two ceremonies were held to honor the 8th graders and commemorate this milestone in their educational journey. Filled with heartfelt and emotional speeches from students, administrators and board members, who reflected on the challenges of the past year, as well as the tremendous legacy of Kranz Intermediate School. Special awards and scholarships were given to students and Kranz's three retiring teachers, Alice Shum, Tim Otters and Haile Ucbagaber were honored for their combined 90 years of service. Everyone was grateful to be able to gather together one last time on the campus and celebrate the Kranz Cougar spirit.

The Madrid Middle School class of 2021 was also honored during two promotion ceremonies, marking the completion of their eighth grade year and recognizing them as the final promoting class for Madrid which has served the community since 1992.  Celebratory speeches from the school’s valedictorians and salutatorian, as well as board members and administrators highlighted the students’ achievements and the outstanding instruction and programs the school has provided for the past 29 years.  Students were commended for pushing through the many obstacles of the past year and Madrid’s outstanding team of teachers and staff were praised for providing a continuum of learning and exceptional support during the very challenging school year.

“As we conclude this extremely difficult and challenging school year I am remarkably proud of our students, teachers, support staff, administrators and parents who have shown tremendous strength, resiliency and determination in the face of some very challenging obstacles,” said Lillian Maldonado French, Superintendent.    “In Mountain View we are proud to provide our students with a strong educational foundation which has prepared them well for their future school years and I know they will continue to strive for excellence as they move on to their next grade level and for our eighth graders on to high school.  Their potential is limitless and our entire Mountain View family wishes them all the best.”
