Twin Lakes' Outreach Helps Children's Hospital LA

Students at Twin Lakes School in the Mountain View School District recently participated in a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) community service project by sending online Halloween cards to Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Students wrote a personal note in the cards to help make Halloween a little more spook-tacular for a special child at the hospital.  The cards were printed by the hospital staff and hand-delivered to patients.  As an added bonus, an anonymous benefactor donated $1 for each card that was sent. Over the course of a week, Twin Lakes students sent over 27,800 cards which equates to a donation of over $27,800.

"The number of cards that the students sent was overwhelming and very unexpected,” said Dr. Shane Muetzel, Principal.  “We're really looking forward to building on this great start and providing more opportunities for our students to participate in outreach and share their kindness with others."

Destiny Santos, a seventh grader was motivated to participate in the project because she wanted to help others.

"I thought about what if I were in the hospital and that made me want to help," she said.

Eighth grader, Anna Hua also was happy to support the outreach.

"I wanted to help raise money for the hospital and it was pretty easy to do," she said.

Twin Lakes will continue to offer outreach opportunities for students to participate in as part of the school’s PBIS program.

"We're so proud of what our students have accomplished but we're even more proud of their generosity in doing something special for other children whom they'll never meet," said Maria McCullough, Dean of Instruction.
